Although today, Jews mark years based on the creation of the world (according to one calculation), this was not always the case. During the Temple period and for some time afterwards, dates were kept based on the year of the reign of the king, "minyan shtarot", or some other accepted norm. The year of the completetion of the first Temple was given as 480 years after the Exodus from Egypt, for example.
