Bob Gates is acting and speaking like a responsible adult who actually and in reality is responsible for millions of peoples lives.
One poster cites one single preemptive attack that was not responded to as precedent that none would ever be responded to. He forgets that the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was a preemptive attack that was responded to.
Just as the Japanese had no ability to follow up and control US response, nobody has the ability to follow up and control any Iranian reaction. Neither the troops nor the desire exists for such an effort.
