Amazing history there. I never even knew the german colonists stayed on so long, or that a couple was killed and only then did they all leave. I`ll bet there`s an interesting story in there.
And of course, any story like this that touches on the desperate bargaining for lives, for dozens of lives while millions are killed, simply serves as a reminder of the absolute horror of the Holocaust and its staggering dimensions, and the fact that it was conceived of and perpetrated in modern Europe, respectful of the various bureaucratic formalities involved.
Someone referenced the British consistently working to rescue Jews out of europe since 1939. I`m not sure what the intent of that comment is, but of course 1939 is when the white paper went into effect that cut legal Jewish immigration to Eretz Israel to a low five figure number just when millions needed to escape and had nowhere to go. |
