Thanks for the excellent article. It is on a subject very dear to my heart. I am a Hebrew Catholic, born to a Jewish mother but adopted shortly after birth by Catholics. According to Halachah my status is that of a "captive child". I did not find out about my adoption and hence my Jewish birth until I was nearly 50, but the circumstances of my life (born in WWII-era NY--a very Jewish city, and having concentrated in Classics and New Testament Greek) had prepared me for my Jewish heritage. And I continue to study about my people and their history, It is something I am very proud of. Some of the responses to your article saddened me: I am deeply distressed both by anti-Semitism (something I find among "secularized" Christians--for whom religion is merely a cultural thing--rather than among believing Christians) and by the more-understandable, but equally regrettable anti-Christian bias of many Jews who do not take the time to recognize that not all Christians are the same. |
