By Ofri Ilani: How many Jews would there be if not for the Holocaust?

Title:Numbers are suspect.

Fact: Hitler killed 6 million out of about 9 million Jews.

Fact: Population of Europe in 1950 was 550 million. In 2008, it was 732 million, growing by 33%.

Fact: If we apply the same 33% growth to the 9 million Jews around in 1940s, then we arrive at a total number of 12 million. Hitler`s murders translate to a deficit of 1.33x6 million, or 8 million today. But somehow Pergola comes up with a deficit of 21 million.

Della Pergola numbers work only if you assume that Jews would have reproduced much faster than other Europeans, which seems doubtful, because European populations are crashing particularly quickly in Poland, the Ukraine, and other areas with historically large Jewish populations, and it seems likely that Jewish populations would have followed those of their Gentile neighbors.
