Sharansky has been a candidate for this position before, and lost. The reason is his total lack of concern for American Jewry. They were at the forefront fighting for his release for years and then when he became a minister he totally ignored Conservative and Reform Jews despite the fact they made up the majority of his `rescuers`. In the JA they still hold some influence and he was out. He is not a sure thing.
