For the econmic side of it - even though Israel has just as good or even better military technology (worlds 3rd largets military exporter) Israel spends the majority of its own defense budget (plus military aid) buying American systems - there are tens if not hundereds of thousands of people who would loose their jobs if Israel bought elsewhere. Take for example the US is cancelling the F-22 fighter jet. 24,000 people are loosing their job because of it. Israel would rather buy this plane, but the US does not allow exports - all these jobs could be save for 10 years if they would let Israel buy it.
