Emile Habibi, an Israeli Arab writer whose depiction of the predicament of Arabs in the Jewish state made him one of the most prominent and popular authors in the Middle East, was awarded Israel`s highest cultural award, the Israel Prize, in 1992.
Two years previouslym he had been awarded the top Palestinian literary honor, the Jerusalem Medal, by the Palestine Liberation Organization.
