Then to the jews: the word "jew" is for both the religion and the nation. The state of Israel was founded for both of them. Israel is supposed to be the country, where any jew (religios or secular) could leave a peaceful life. Israel gives the possibility for the religious jews to do live a full religious life: noone has to work on saturday, the national holidays are mostly the religious holidays. For the secular jews, these are part of their ancestors traditions, for he religious, these are holy days. In Israel anyone can have a religious wedding, funeral, go to religious school without fearing and discrimination.
The problem in Israel is, and this is what Gideon Levy is writing about, that the secular have no right to live a secular life. There is no istitution for secular wedding, no registered partnership, most of the country is without public transport 1 day a week, religious rules are to be obeyed during holidays etc. |
