... then Hamas, as it now exists, cannot be part of the solution. Here is the great contradiction of President Obama`s policy. Any Palestinian government which claims to respect Israel`s security needs cannot include political elements which reject Israel and call for its destruction. And yet, if Palestine is to be a democratic state, as Mr Obama urges, Hamas cannot be excluded from its electoral life. And given Hamas` broad popular support, chances are very good it would form the first formal Palestinian state government. Then what? MV
