Does it really matter that much. Traditions are kept not because they are still applicable but so the family chain is not broken. It depends on the individual and how much he wants to do things the same way his ancestors did. As long as he is not breaking the law he should do what he feels is right for him and if he can not possibly live without rice for seven days then he can become sfardi and follow all of their minhagim. But I am not sure you can pick and choose.
