Syria enjoys - rightly - high credibility, respect and popularity in the Arab World (as compared for example to Egyptian regime with almost zero credibility or popularity). Striking a peace deal with Syria would be one of the smartest moves Israel has ever done! Rabin knew that, and was even close to reaching peace with Syria, hadn`t he been assassinated. Olmert`s commitment to a full withdrawal from the Golan in the indirect talks thru turkey was also a smart move in the right direction. |
