This is what pagans do. The want to feel the numinous, as all humans do, but they don`t want to be saddled with any kind of responsibilities after that contact is made. It`s easy and cheap -- religion as consumerism, just pick from all that`s available and build a pantheon of your favorites.
It works, until the dumber pagans congregate around a slightly smarter and manipulative one. Then you have a cult with the usual terrible results of sexual abuse of the weak.
Polytheism is no guarantee for a peaceful society either. Many of the great empires of all time were polytheistic: Egypt, Assyria, Babylonia, Rome. Most solar polytheisms evolved human sacrifice.
Sorry to say, but neo-paganism is retrograde and will only lead to terrible things. |
