| No one doubts that Jerusalem is important to Moslems, but Palestine is not intended to be an Islamic state. Yet even though the importance of Jerusalem to a Palestinian state is not obvious, Barak and Sharon and Olmert offered (and Arafat and Abbas rejected) a shared Jerusalem. Apparently, the Palestinian leadership is unwilling to recognize the importance of Jerusalem or Hebron or Shechem (Nablus) for Jews, because they are unwilling to recognize Israel as a Jewish state. The Palestinian leadership appears unwilling to accept that compromise is a two-way street. |
