| America fought a war in Vietnam. During the course of that war a group of American soldiers on patrol had occassion to enter the village of My Lai. One thing led to another and the Americans slaughtered 109 of the residents of the village. The news of what became known as the My Lai massacre shook America to its core. Some supported the killing but most were horrified. The incident remains a major part of the folklore of the war and the era. More recently, Israel, in an effort to kill their Hamas enemies had occassion to kill many hundreds of Palestinian civilians. Although that war got lots of media play in Israel, the killing of the civilians was shrugged off and is largely forgotten or dismissed by Israelis today. This is the difference between an amoral society like America and an immoral society like Israel. The only time the Israelis get their passions up is when it is Jews who are targetted and killed such as these two policemen. |
