I am a French scholar and I dont give much credit to this Prize.
Anti-Israel intellectuals, unlike antisemites, are very happy to reward somebody who denies the existence of the Jewish people, or considers it was invented out of very little. This is the best way to illegitimate the State of Israel. The author is gaining a reputation on trouble waters.
Genetics has little to do in this matter and we are Jews because we think ourselves as Jews and because we are recognized as such by our fellows coreligionists. I have records of more than five centuries of judaism in my own family and I consider as Jews people who are very different of me.
At any rate the author of the book even if he is sincere (I dont say he is right) should be aware of the use some people make of his controversial statements. I have already found in the French press titles such "And what if the Jewish people never existed ?" The answer to the question is not far : Israel is a state without legitimacy. |
