| Your suggestion that Fascist Italy had a lesser culpability for its actions during the Shoah than other European nations because no deportations of Jews occurred until Italy`s conquest by Germany makes no sense. The fact is that deportations of Jews to death camps occurred under German occupation in all European countries other than those declared officially "neutral". Italy was in fact more complicit than most countries because its Fascist anti-Semitic legislation had prepared the way for the Germans in advance of the Shoah, & the vatican in the heart of Italy had nurtured xtian anti_Semitism for millenia. On the other hand, the heroism of Bulgaria`s citizenry, which stubornly & openly refused to surrender its Jews to the Nazi machine, allowed its Jews to survive the Holocaust. Bulgaria`s action under duress is the proof of the utter culpability of the rest of Europe which simply chose to participate in the Shoah, actively or "passively". Italy deverves no passes here. |
