Every spring there used to be a mild paranoid hysteria in Israel. `Will Syria attack?"
There would be a buzz of discussion, the usual paranoid predictions, followed by the inevitable tapering off of the discussion.
The endless attempt to talk Israel into attacking Iran have induced in Israel an endless cycle of scaring itself to death over something it cannot do anything about.
Worse, it is generally understood that nothing can be done. No sane person thinks that a simple `surgical` strike can accomplish anything aside from delaying the Iranians. Others, aware of the detailed inspections and controls imposed by the IAEA warn that an attack could well result in Iran leaving the NPT and actually pressing for a bomb.
Still the endless panic and fear mongering goes around in a circle. A cycle of self-amplification. A feed-back loop to disaster.
Israel is profoundly frustrated, manifesting itself in the endless calls for another war to bring back the glory days of 1967 and Osirak. |
