No reason to be perplexed. Had the war in Iraq ended with peace and order with the overthrow of Sadam, the regime in Iran would have been history by now. so would have been Syria and a much greater cooperation of the Pakistanis in crushing the Taliban in their own country and Afghanistan. However, that was not the result that was hoped for. Partly it was due to the incompetence and arrogance of the US government in its planning and in its setting of priorities.
Iran Shia and the Arab Suni united in thwarting the initial US success in Iraq and actuality defeatged the US and its Allies, who joined only to split the spoils and left as soon as the cost rose above the potential benefits and in their assessment of the US leadership.
It is difficult , even in hindsight, to come out with what could have been a winning strategy for the US and its allies.
This situation may be the natural ebb and tide in the history of the world. Empires come and go. even so do religions. |
