The chess-masters of Tehran are very close to winning their game - the acquisition of nuclear weapons - through half-truths, whole lies, and the willingness of too many in the world to allow themselves to be taken in by these rogues.
2009 will be a most fateful year. Regardless of what the US says or does, no matter what restraint it may urge or threaten upon Israel, I cannot see Mr Netanyahu, as Prime Minister, allowing the Iranians to win the game. It is probably weeks - months at most - before Israel strikes a blow for what it sees as its very survival.
The only question, in my mind, is America`s role. Admiral Mullen, at least, does not sound as if he will urge President Obama to try reining in Israel - and possibly, quite the opposite.
