the land that is now Israel was Ottoman, having been returned to them with British help after the Egyptians withdrew in the 1840`s.
Lincoln signed a trading and transportation treaty with the Ottomans in 1862.
and the British ? Lord Palmerston actually sent troops to Canada to prepare for war against the Union - and Britain effectively sided with the Confederacy throughout the war.
