| Abraham Lincoln strongly favored religious freedom and tolerance, but he was not a visionary who advocated or supported a movement which had not yet started. The myth of his support for Zionism has been around for many decades and is without substance. For some reason every side in the `Zionism` issue has sought to co-opt Abraham Lincoln. I have read some pretty silly twaddle on this subject. Perhaps the only subject which he is more misrepresented on is race. Or, possibly his motives before and during the Civil War. Lincoln the Myth, the constantly changing myth, is more powerful in the imagination of people than Lincoln the man, whom they hardly know. |
