Syria won`t accept peace talks (let alone peace} until Israel agrees to withdraw completely from the Golan. They will always support Hezbollah and groups like Hamas and the PFLP. Their interest in trade with the EU is far less important than their need to demonize Israel for domestic control. When oil runs out in 80 years and countries like Iraq and Saudi Arabia begin to crave trade and investment from the west, Syria will still be the last to be cajoled into making peace with Israel.
So forget them. Forget the 1923 international border, forget the 1949 armistice line. By the time Syria is ready to discuss borders, the Arab League will have about as much influence at the UN as my neighborhood kindergarten parents` association. |
