| Venus Williams is a hypocrite. If a white-led apartheid state were hosting a WTA tournament and barred black players -- even one black player -- because of their race, Williams would be screaming "Racism!" and calling for a boycott. However, since the UAE granted Andy Ram a visa, Williams`s conscience is assuaged and she can gladly play again in her $2 million tournament. It`s a disgrace. The granting of a visa to Ram does not excuse the UAE`s racism or negate it. In fact, Ram is now the token Jew. I am sure that as a black American competing in a sport traditionally played by whites in private clubs, Williams knows about tokenism. Just because there is one black or one Jew invited doesn`t mean it`s not racism. I am disappointed that a black tennis star wouldn`t speak out forcefully against it. |
