Actually, I don`t have much of a problem with the US sending a small delegation to see the direction in which the preparations are going, but I also don`t see what benefit the US derives from participating at all. Having worked in more than two dozen developing countries over many years, I recognize that the only benefit the UN has is that it enables folks from those countries to live on first-world incomes in places like New York and Geneva and Rome. Except that it`s a nice deal for those folks, other than a few of the specialiized agencies (WHO, UNICEF, FAO, for example), the UN is a complete waste of US money, money that should be targeted to some of our own problems. Arab-organized conferences like this are merely a perk that the UN pays for with mostly US money. Many of these third-world folks are nice people, but, believe me, what really interests them are the restaurants, the bars, and the local hookers. These conferences are just great fun for them--content unimportant.
