With the continued expansion in settlements, the possibility of a Palestinian state grows less and less likely. Given demographic trends, that leaves three possible outcomes:
1) Ethnic cleansing of Palestinians to drive them out or kill them until they become a minority.
2) An apartheid state where millions of Palestinians are legally second-class citizens or have no access to government representation.
3) A pluralistic democracy where, due to the Palestinian majority, Israel ceases to be a Jewish state.
Options 1 and 2 are not sustainable solutions; the international community may let apartheid slip for a while, but, absent the possibility of a Palestinian state endgame, even America will start putting tremendous pressure on Israel to give full rights to Palestinians.
So that, to me, leaves the end of the Jewish state as the only sustainable long-term outcome of the expansion of settlements. I leave it to you to decide whether that`s a good thing or not. |
