| My first step in attempting to redefine Zionism is to begin reading Avraham Burg`s book "The Holocaust is Over We Must Rise from Its Ashes". Burg`s reasoning resonates with me - if Israel`s existence is grounded in a constant obsession with external threats and a related militarization of the State, then I say "No thank you!" Interestingly, I am also in the process of reading Shmuel Katz`s biography of Jabotinsky and it is clear that the Zionism at the time of the Jewish Legion during World War I was very different from the so-called Zionism of today. Specifically, the Zionism of Jewish Legion times was more outward and universal in perspective - unlike the insular and particularistic Zionism of modern Israel. |
