"Israel wants it both ways; to punish Gaza and have world approval."
I`m afraid that Silvienne is dead right. Too many people in Israel want to be able to punish the Palestinians in Gaza and at the same time command "respect", when it`s quite clear that Gaza was an absolute disaster for Israel`s public image. I know that hawkish Israelis love to huff and puff about "we don`t need them!". But when or if Israel finally becomes a pariah nation, it will no longer be politically acceptable for other nations such as the USA to grant it the enormous amounts of financial and military aid that it currently receives, because for any politician to support such aid will be a guaranteed vote-loser - and then Israel will really be in trouble. Sooner or later Israel will have to wean itself off its illusions and start behaving like a grown-up country. |
