The Associated Press: Vatican to bishop: Recant Holocaust denial before excommunication fully lifted

Title:#14 - is the pope really misunderstood?

You claim that the pope is "misunderstood" and "not a poltician" - I`m not so sure about that. I would agree that he may have known about Williamsons ongoing rehabilitation, but not his holocaust-denying interview.

But Joseph Ratzinger always has been a conservative hardliner, who seeks to "sharpen the profile" of his church at the cost of dialouge and moderate positions. He installed a new bishop in Linz, Mr. Wagner, who holds positions like "homosexuality is an illness" and "New Orleans was destroyed because of its sin". Wagner also said a thing that may apply to the mindset of his pope as well, that "maybe the number of followers of the church must shrink for it to become more powerful again". So, there is a pattern; radicalization clearly is on the agenda.

In the meantime, holocaust-denying Williamson stated that he refused to repent until he had "checked the evidence" about the holocaust (jeez!). Some say the pope may (and should) excommunicate Williamson again.
