Those are the first two words that came to mind when I read this article. These illegal outposts are not merely illegal by UN standards, they are illegal by Israeli law. Why should a government have to compromise with people in order to get them to obey the law? Thats pathetic. What ever happened to law and order?
When a state loses the ability to maintain its own laws, it may be a serious symptom of state-failure. The biggest threat to the existence of the state doesn`t come from Kassams or ever the occasional suicide bomber. These things are certainly dreadful, as they pose a threat to the citizens of Israel. But the safety of Israeli citizens and the existence of the state are two separate issues. The existence of a Jewish state necessitates a state; a state`s chief characteristic is that its government is able to enforce its laws. That`s what a state is!!
Israelis need to ask themselves this question: Do we want to be the next Colombia or Pakistan (or NYC in the `80s)? |
