| There is a basic misunderstanding in this entire discussion. Lifting the excommunication does not "reinstate" anyone. (The excommunicated were never Catholic bishops.) Nor does it permit them to function as Catholic bishops--they are still suspended from sacred functions. It is nothing more than a gesture toward reconciliation for a disobedient and dissident group. Williamson`s views on Jews, Judaism, and the Holocaust are indeed unacceptable--by the Magisterium`s own pronouncements. So all the outrage is based on simple ignorance of the issues involved. |
