The intolerant tone of some of these posts is disturbing. There are many reasons to be concerned about the rehabilitation of men who were made bishops outside the Church`s authority since they went against all the progressive forces set in motion by Pope John XXIII.
For Catholics, this is a regressive step to appease some reactionary elements in the Church. For all people of faith, this represents the Catholic Church in a sour mood, not caring much about its relationship to other faith groups, as this pope has shown in his insensitive comments towards Muslims, Anglicans and Jews. For Jews, this is exceptionally insensitive, even by the low standards of the long history of intolerance of the Catholic Church. (By the way, this pope held the office of the Holy Inquisition, under a more modern name.) As for my fellow "Italians," Niccolo and Andrea, I am ashamed! No Italian I know has ever expressed such intolerant and aggressive anti-Semitism. I am Italian and was raised a Catholic. |
