I think the Vatican spokesperson has made clear that lifting the excommunication does not mean endorsing any revisionism. A person excommunicated is recognized officially to be in a state of separation from the Church, because with word, act or example propagates division and confusion among the faithfuls. To make an example, if somebody who calls himself catholic declares that Jesus was not a Jew, this could be a reason for excommunication. But the Shoah is a matter of historical science, so it is nonsensical to excommunicate anybody for opinions about the Shoah. In fact, it would be a bad idea, because it would suggest that the study of the Shoah is a matter of faith! |
