An excellent article that makes an extremely important point, that the Israeli people must be told the truth about military matters.
Israel is unique in that the Israeli people make up the bulk of the IDF, organised around a small number of professional permanent military members.
Since 1948 Israel has frequently been involved in conventional wars against neighbouring states, dealt with terrorist attacks and handled with the security situation involved in occupying territory in the West Bank and Gaza, the Golan Heights, southern Lebanon and the Sinai peninsula.
Operation Cast Lead was NOT a war, it did not involve another state and the enemy is a milltia armed with small arms and simple mortars and rockets. Hamas does not have an army, air force or navy while Israel does. IT is asymmetrical warfare, not a war.
If Israel is to survive the politicians and military must tell the truth, thsi operation looks more like a political event in advance of the forthcoming elections. |
