Victory in war always has to be measured against the objectives set. Israel wanted the removal of Hamas and the guarantee that Hamas would never again be able to fire rockets into Israel. Did it achieve those objectives? Be honest. Hamas wanted survival in Gaza and the lifting of the blockade which had produced empty UN relief warehouses. Did it achieve those objectives? Be honest. What were the downsides of the war? For Hamas, a massive death toll among innocent civilians and wholesale destruction of Gaza infrastructure. For Israel, a PR disaster - universal international disgust at its casual slaughter of civilians from the safety of 20,000 feet. Now Israel`s "victory" is somehow being sold as the reason it will now be able to pay a higher price for the release of Shalit than before the war began.
Only in the Alice-in-Wonderland world of Israeli propaganda is such nonsensical, perverted logic possible. |
