As admitted by "military sources", months before the attack, i.e. months before the alleged provocation of Hamas calling an end to the truce and firing rockets, the IDF had a specific date in mind and a specific target, the graduating police recruits. This gives a lot of weight to the argument that Israel was in fact responsible for breaking the truce by its provocative attack on militants at the very end of the truce. Did Israel intentionally provoke Hamas in order to get the response it wanted to justify attacking Gaza? They were ready to go ahead, having achieved the legal justifications they desired that gave the IDF and politicians cover against claims of war crimes in their targeting of civilians and civilian infrastructure.
Why does this remind me of Bush and Cheney seeking legal opinions from the OLC to justify the torture of detainees during interrogations? Or Bush and Cheney cherry-picking intelligence in order to justify the IRAQ war? |
