| Armies, like the societies they protect, have their share of bad guys. During a wartime scenario, these bad guys often get carried away with their villany. We have seen a couple of dozen cases with the American forces in Iraq where abuse was found and brought to trial and the perpetrators jailed or otherwise punished. This gave the American forces a little more respect than they would have had otherwise. In Israel, we see very few cases of investigations finding misbehavior in the IDF. Maybe it`s because the IDF proclaims itself the most moral army in the world and the investigators would hate to shatter their own illusions. More likely it is because the investigators don`t try very hard. They stall for time then quietly drop the case. Israel is not a nation which takes kindly to investigations of its behavior and for good reason. Thats one reason they lack the respect they crave. |
