`correct me if I`m wrong...`
Okay. You`re wrong, and I`ll correct you. First off, the `1917 accord` wasn`t an accord. The Balfour Declaration was a declaration. It declared that Britain `viewed with favor` the establishment of a Jewish homeland in Palestine -- provided that nothing was done to prejudice the position of the Palestinians.
They were merely stating their approval of the establishment of `a homeland` -- so long as it didn`t incommode the current inhabitants. Not that Britain controlled the territory at the time.
In Britain`s view, by 1922 the goal had been accomplished. There was a fine, thriving Zionist community of about 80,000 people. No need for any expansion beyond that point.
That`s it. There`s your great charter. |
