The primary driving force in Israel is to fill up the west bank with settlements. Israel has been surprised by the weakness and lack of resolve among EU and American leadership regarding these settlements, so Israel has increased the rate of expansion. This is called "making hay while the sun is shining".
There is no better distraction for Israels purposes than a war in Gaza. There has not been a peep about settlements in the international media for months. Israel has gladly given up peace in exchange for settlement expansion. It has worked well because the Palestinains have very little potential to hurt Israel. Israelis scream and kick about the 20 Israelis killed by Qassams in the past 8 years as if it was a second holocaust. In that same 8 years, Israel has killed thousands of Palestinians and just plays it off as a days work. Israel will take this trade every day. It is only when Israel starts feeling real pain or we see a really strong leader in America that it will end. |
