The Associated Press: Arab states say Israel used ammo in Gaza that contained depleted uranium

It seems to me unlikely that the IDF used depleted uranium in its shells in Gaza.
The reason to use uranium to make shells is not to make them "harder", but that this element is very dense, and allows to build projectiles which are very penetrating.
Depleted uranium allows to build "needles" that penetrate armors by means of concentrated kinetic energy.
Such ammunition is needed to destroy modern tanks, but I cannot see an use in Gaza where Hamas has no tanks.
This said, enough carnage was done already with conventional shells.
