| the tendency to act as if Israel`s interests are synonamous with America`s interests. Is it in America`s interests to destabilise every secular regime bordering Israel by blindly supporting Israeli war crimes and obscenities committed in the name of national `defense`? I think not. Just as Israel`s policy in 1982 was to extinguish the PLO in Lebanon to prevent the organisation from pursuing a moderating stance which it had clearly commenced proved to be an unwise move that gave added short term breathing space for Israel at the expense of a more explosive long term outcome for the region, so now the US should not be misled into a rejectionist stance against Hamas, which leads to further radicalisation of Israel`s neighbours in Egypt and Jordan as well as in Syria and of the Palestinians in general. Fighting a massive conflict against Iran for the sake of eliminating all Israel`s potential enemies is neither viable nor wise. Finally getting Israel to cease ALL settlement building would be an encouraging indication that Obama might be interested in acting as something other than what Aaron D.Miller, the former State Department official who served as a Middle East negotiator rightly called, `Israel`s attorney`. |
