| I visited the synagogue in Surabaya some 15 years ago. The woman who is the leader of the small, mainly Iraqi-descendant Jewish community is herself an Indonesian convert to Judaism, cuase enough for her to go underground in the face of threats. On High Holy Days two Lubavitchers came up from Australia to lead the services. They walked the markets in their heavy black outfits even though the temperatures were easily in the 90s. |
