Israel has never thought beyond the point of victory. They have never known what to do with a victory once they have achieved it. For Israel, it is sufficient to win a victory, keep the IDF in control of the conquered territory, call it defense, and ignore all paths toward a genuine peace. This time around, as in Lebanon, they will pull out again, baffled that Hamas is not destroyed. They will form another Winograd committee and fight political battles at home. Meanwhile Hamas will grow in strength as did Hezbolah. Confused Israel will try again. Victory and peace are not synonomous; but until Israel learns the difference, there will be no peace; only one failed victory after another. |
