Olmert wants to keep it up; Barak wants a quick agreement and to stop; Livni wants to pull out, now that she is convinced that Israel has taught Hamas a lesson. Hamas doesn`t agree. The mediators want peace but don`t understand what Israel wants. Neither does anybody else. The trouble is that victory is not peace. For Israel, a victory is sufficient. But when she has a victory, she hasn`t the faintest idea what to do with it. She doesn`t think beyond that point. And so, back to the status quo ante. Soon it will be time to have another go at it. Yesterday Lebanon, today Gaza, tomorrow .... well, no one know where; but for sure we all know what. |
