Let`s put things in perspective here. Israel began blockading the Gaza Strip immediately after Hamas won the democratic elections in Jan. 2006 and in spite of the fact that Hamas indicated it was interested in a political dialogue. The EU decided foolishly to support Israel`s boycott of Hamas. Also remember that Israel began withholding income from customs duties from the Gaza Strip. Remember the words of Mr Dov Weisglass, adviser to Sharon and Olmert that Israel was going to "put the Palestinians on a diet". Faced with the blockade the Palestinians began to dig tunnels, of which there are hundreds now. If I would have been a Palestinian I would have done the same. One cannot blame Hamas for arming itself. Seen from its perspective the firing of the missiles was an annoying reminder to Israelis that not all the cards are in Israel`s hands. If you want to stop tunneling and the missiles, then you need to lift the blockade of the Gaza Strip. It is simple. |
