Israek has always been told to withdraw, by the UN --from the very beginning of the war. Israel complied (to considerable extent) in 1948-49. In 1957, it withdrew from Sinai. But not so quickly after 1967, and the failure of the 1957 Sinai withdrawal. Israel does learn from the past.
It is to be expected that Israel will be less amenable to foreign pressure than it was in Lebanon, two years ago.
A letter from me published in The New Leader January 1978 predicted that Egypt would play a role in bringing an end to the war. It would be enormously helpful were President Mubarak to meet in Israel with the Israeli leadership while she is still fighting in Gaza. Yes, Mubarak should do a Sadat. |
