However much restraint Israel is doubtless showing in attempting to limit its attacks to targets which are thought to be legitimate, the question is, what is their objective? If it is to teach Hamas a lesson, it is unlikely to produce the desired result, if it is some form of psychological ploy, then it would actually tend to strengthen the hand of the other side. If it is to show the Israeli population that the government is doing something, that is perhaps not the best motive. Perhaps Israel should offer a million dollars per family to waive any Palestinian rights of return, then at the cost of a hundred billion, Israel could create a prosperous, fraternal state next door and abide by its democratic principles at the same time. Itīs better than trying to pretend that the populating of occupied land by the Israeli population is legal.
