first, he`s never WAS the villain that he`s been made out to be by israel and the u.s.
second, he`s managed at last to secure control of the military and government from members of the old guard, whose power had limited and curtailed his own since his father`s death.
and his "hints" to the west, especially to the united states, subtle as they might be, are hard to miss!
so is the potential for assad to make a positive difference in middle-east affairs.
