| The letter of the law but not its spirit. The bane of Orthodoxy. The rabbinic autorities did nothing when the Agriporcessing schandal was revealed except to declare all was kosher. It was neither kosher, nor yosher. Rabbis will demand the utmost scupulousness when it comes to parameters of female modesty, the best kind of blech for shabbos use, the minutiae of kashrut, but when it comes to the parameters of business ethics, well, then things become a bit more elastic. Business is business, after all and if individuals or organisations are handsomely profitting, well, its not the kitchen or the bedroom, so dont look so closely. Perhaps the rabbi at this gilded shul should have been asking some more probing questions, giving more drashas on yosher, on definitions of philanthropy. The house has fallen and as a result of greed Jews everywhere will be tarnished by this horrific act of greed, pride and contempt. And the effects will not be felt just by Fifth Ave. synagogue. |
