Last time round the IDF invaded Gaza to attack the Hamas tunnel and started the Qassams. This time round the IDF waded into the West Bank, killed an Islamic Jihad commander and abducted 22 other militants.
Now you can argue about whether the tunnel should have been there and you argue that there is no truce on the West Bank, but in both cases, the IDF knew very well that the violent action it was planning would almost certainly provoke qassams.
The headline says Hamas wants a ceasefire - but with Qassams. You could equally well say, Israel wants a ceasfire - but with right to raid as and where it wants.
I suspect western governments, despite their justifiable loathing of Hamas, can see that the IDF and Israeli government also have a pattern of undermining progress on peace. |
